Frequently asked questions

How do I compare two texts?

Paste the original version in the first box and the changed version in the second. The differences appear underneath straight away: added text is green and removed text is red and crossed out.

Should I compare by words or by lines?

Compare by words for essays, articles and contracts, where small edits inside sentences matter. Compare by lines for lists, code and data, where each line is a separate item.

What does “% the same” mean?

It’s the share of words (or lines) the two versions have in common. 100% means they’re identical and 0% means they share nothing.

Can I ignore changes to capitals or spacing?

Yes. Tick Ignore capitals so “Hello” and “hello” count as the same, and Ignore spacing so extra spaces or line breaks don’t show up as changes.

Is this a plagiarism checker?

No. Text compare shows the differences between two texts you already have. It doesn’t search the internet for copied text.

Is my text private?

Yes. The comparison runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded, so it’s safe for confidential documents.
