Frequently asked questions

How do I make a table in Markdown?

Type the cells into the grid above (or paste them from a spreadsheet) and copy the Markdown. A Markdown table is rows of cells separated by |, with a line of dashes under the header row.

How do I convert Excel or Google Sheets to Markdown?

Select the cells in your spreadsheet, copy them, and paste into the Paste data box. The table appears straight away, ready to edit and copy.

How do I convert CSV to a Markdown table?

Paste the CSV into the Paste data box. Commas and semicolons are both recognised, and values in quotes (like "Smith, Jo") stay in one cell.

How do I align columns?

Choose Left, Centre or Right above each column. This adds colons to the dashes under the header (:---, :---:, ---:), which tells Markdown how to align that column.

Can I tidy an existing Markdown table?

Yes. Paste it into the Paste data box and the columns are lined up, so the table is easy to read even as plain text. Its alignment is kept.

What about | characters and line breaks in cells?

They’re handled for you: a | inside a cell is written as \|, and line breaks become <br>, which GitHub and most Markdown viewers display as a new line.
