Frequently asked questions
How does Werdz count words?
Werdz uses your browser's built-in language-aware text segmentation, so words are counted accurately across languages, including those that don't separate words with spaces. Hyphenated words and contractions like “don't” count as one word.
Do spaces count as characters?
The main character count includes spaces and punctuation. We also show a count without spaces, which some publications and forms require. Emoji and accented letters count as a single character each.
Is my text private?
Yes. All counting happens on your device. Your text is never uploaded; it's only saved in your own browser so you don't lose your work if you close the tab.
How is reading time calculated?
Reading time assumes an average of 238 words per minute, and speaking time assumes 140 words per minute.
Is Werdz dyslexia-friendly?
Werdz includes optional tools that many dyslexic readers and writers find helpful: fonts such as Lexend and OpenDyslexic, larger text, extra line and letter spacing, tinted backgrounds, a mode that fades everything except the sentence you're on, highlighting for long sentences and commonly confused words, and read aloud with each word highlighted as it's spoken. Open Reading & writing help under the text box to try them. Everyone reads differently, so mix and match whatever works for you.
How many pages is my text?
Werdz estimates about 500 words per page single-spaced and 250 words per page double-spaced, using a standard 12pt font with 1-inch margins. So 1,000 words is about 2 pages single-spaced or 4 pages double-spaced.
What is a readability score?
Werdz uses the Flesch reading-ease formula, which scores text from 0 to 100 based on sentence length and syllables per word. Higher is easier: 60–70 is plain English that most adults read comfortably, and below 30 is very difficult. The reading level shows the approximate US school grade needed to understand the text.
What are the character limits for X, Instagram and LinkedIn?
An X (Twitter) post allows 280 characters, an Instagram caption 2,200, and a LinkedIn post 3,000. A meta description should be about 155 characters, a single SMS is 160, and a UCAS personal statement is 4,000. Pick a preset above the text box to see how many characters you have left.
