Frequently asked questions
Do spaces count as characters?
Yes, in the main count. Spaces, punctuation and line breaks all count as characters, which is how X (Twitter), Instagram and most forms count them. Werdz also shows the count without spaces, which some publishers and application forms ask for.
How are emoji counted?
Each emoji counts as one character, even ones like 👍🏽 or 👨👩👧 that are made of several hidden parts. Accented letters such as é also count as one. Note that X counts most emoji as two characters, so your post may use slightly more of the limit.
What are the character limits for social media?
An X (Twitter) post allows 280 characters, an Instagram caption 2,200, a LinkedIn post 3,000 and a TikTok caption 4,000. A Google meta description shows about 155 characters, and a single SMS holds 160. Choose a preset above the text box to see how many characters you have left.
What is the UCAS personal statement character limit?
A UCAS personal statement can be up to 4,000 characters including spaces. Choose the UCAS preset above the text box: the bar turns amber as you get close and red if you go over.
Is my text private?
Yes. All counting happens on your device and your text is never uploaded. It’s only saved in your own browser so you don’t lose your work if you close the tab.
